Ian Bull was a committee member of the former Royal Arsenal Woolwich Historical Society which was formed in 1982 by the establishment’s staff to save its vast archive stretching back almost 500 years. They succeeded and then set about digitising untold tens of thousands of documents and photographs, a nationally important task. Today, Ian, and his colleague, Steven Peterson, hold and administer the results with a determined aim to make them publicly available for the first time. Together with Steven, Ian, possesses a now unrivalled knowledge of what was Britain’s largest ever factory and, for many decades, the largest in the world. The Royal Arsenal saved our nation many times over and this talk will give a glimpse of what a remarkable place it was.
